Romans 1:20 – Clearly seen, being understood
The text:
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made. (Romans 1:20)
God’s eternal power and divine nature are seen clearly, being understood from what has been made.
‘Seen’ and ‘understood’ are translations of two Greek verbs:
- Understood: in Greek ‘kathorao’.
To be translated as: to look down, to look on from above, to understand, to weigh up, to grasp. - Seen: in Greek ‘noeo’.
To be translated as: perceive in the spirit, detect, understand, grasp.
Man cannot fathom God, Who is eternal, with his understanding.
This is why God has revealed Himself in His Word, the Bible. One can discover Who God is by accepting the Bible to be the testimony to the Truth.
The text above refers to people who have no knowledge of the Bible, or do not read it.
It is said of them that they have been able to see God’s eternal power and divine nature clearly, with their understanding since the creation of the world.
God’s eternal power and divine nature are visible in creation and are ‘perceived in the spirit’, by ‘looking down’.
Man (the soul) who looks at and studies nature around him with his own eyes (the body), will discover the impressive beauty and precision with which everything is synchronized, in the plants, in the animals and in the human body.
In his spirit he will observe the extraordinary intelligence, the eternal power and the divine nature of the Creator, Who created everything.
