{"id":1375,"date":"2015-04-30T09:58:54","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T08:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=1375"},"modified":"2015-04-30T15:09:26","modified_gmt":"2015-04-30T14:09:26","slug":"matthew-1431-doubt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/matthew-1431-doubt\/","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 14:31 &#8211; Why doubt"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Matthew 14:22-31<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. \u201cIt\u2019s a ghost,\u201d they said, and cried out in fear.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But Jesus immediately said to them: \u201cTake courage! It is I. Don\u2019t be afraid.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cLord, if it\u2019s you,\u201d Peter replied, \u201ctell me to come to you on the water.\u201d<strong> \u201cCome,\u201d he said<\/strong>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. <strong>But when he saw the wind, he was afraid<\/strong> and, beginning to sink, cried out, \u201cLord, save me!\u201d Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. \u201cYou of little faith,\u201d he said, <strong>\u201cwhy did you doubt?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Peter walked on the waves, looked around, and became afraid.<br \/>\nThat is why Jesus asked Peter: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Why<\/strong> <\/span>did you doubt?<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>why<\/strong> is the translation of two words.<br \/>\nThe Greek says:\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Eis tis<\/strong> <\/span>\u2026 did you doubt.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>eis<\/strong> &#8211; to be translated as: to, in, to-in, towards, before, under.<\/li>\n<li><strong>tis<\/strong> &#8211; to be translated as: who, which, what.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This little word \u2018eis\u2019 is found, among other places, in texts which refer to believing <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in<\/strong> <\/span>Jesus, such as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever,<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>believes (trusts: pisteuoo) in (eis) him (autos),<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>shall not perish but have eternal life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (John 3:16)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is very possible, therefore, that Jesus said:\u00a0 Peter, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in whom<\/strong> <\/span>did you doubt.<\/p>\n<p>This:\u00a0 <strong>in whom did you doubt<\/strong> is in contrast met <strong>in whom do you believe<\/strong> or, <strong>in whom do you trust<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>With the question: \u201c<strong>Why<\/strong> did you doubt?\u201d Peter would be thrown back upon himself and he was only able to see that he was sinking in the waves.<br \/>\nThe question \u2018Why?\u2019 makes someone doubt himself. This begs the question: \u201cWhat did I do wrong\u201d, \u201cDo I actually have faith\u201d, or \u201cWhat do I need to do to get greater faith\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus said: \u201c<strong>In whom<\/strong> did you doubt\u201d, <strong>He drew Peter\u2019s attention to Himself<\/strong>.\u00a0 If Peter had kept his eyes on Jesus, he would have noticed that Jesus was standing on the waves, then he would have realised that Jesus would never have said: \u201cCome\u201d, if He was not going to make sure that Peter himself would also be able to walk on the waves, which he really did, at first.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is to be trusted fully when He says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 8:12)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am the way and the truth and the life.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 14:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. &#8230; Do not let your hearts be troubled (dismayed, shocked, confused, panic) and do not be afraid (frightened).\u00a0\u00a0 (John 14:27)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>My yoke is easy and my burden is light.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 11:30)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>I have come that they (those who follow me) may have life, and have it to the full.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (John 10:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Jesus gives an order, or asks something of someone, He will also ensure that it is possible to complete this task.<br \/>\nHe never asks anyone too much.<\/p>\n<p>It is perhaps not always an easy way.<br \/>\nOne must sometimes dare to walk on the waves in order to complete a difficult task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whoever keeps his eyes on Jesus,<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeps trusting in Whom Jesus is<\/li>\n<li>and does not doubt as a result of circumstances or the world around him, will experience Jesus lifting him above the apparent impossibilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See also the study: <a title=\"Hebrews 11:1 \u2013 The assurance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/hebrews-111-assurance\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hebrews 11:1\u00a0&#8211; The assurance<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Print this study as a PDF document:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Matthew-14.31-Why-doubt.pdf\">Matthew 14.31\u00a0&#8211; Why doubt.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matthew 14:22-31 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
