{"id":165,"date":"2014-02-13T16:52:28","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T15:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=165"},"modified":"2014-11-06T12:16:25","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T11:16:25","slug":"bible-short-description","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/bible-short-description\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bible &#8211; A short description"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here we want to explain something about the structure of the Bible, which is the \u2018Manual for life\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible is divided into two large sections, i.e. the Old Testament (O.T.) and the New Testament (N.T.).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THE OLD TESTAMENT.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Old Testament is the first section of the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>The first pages describe how <strong>the world is came into existence<\/strong>, or put differently, how God created the world.<\/p>\n<p>After that follows <strong>the coming into existence and the history of the people of Israel<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt is through this nation that God has wanted to reveal Himself to the world.<br \/>\nHe did so by letting them know how to live in relationship to Him.<br \/>\nGod also gave them rules as to how to live together, in a healthy society.<br \/>\nA large part of the O.T. has to do with the history of this nation, the Israelites.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are <strong>150 songs<\/strong>, written by king David and others, collected in the Book of Psalms.<\/p>\n<p>Many chapters on <strong>wisdom for life<\/strong> are to be found in the Book of Proverbs.<\/p>\n<p>God also revealed, through prophets, what was going to take place in world history.<br \/>\nMany of these <strong>prophecies<\/strong> were fulfilled in the past. Others await their fulfilment in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The coming of a Man, Who is to be a great blessing to mankind, is foretold in many prophecies.<br \/>\nThese <a title=\"A few prophecies fulfilled in the life of Jesus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/prophecies-fulfilled-life-jesus\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">prophecies were fulfilled<\/span><\/a> in the time of the New Testament Gospels, in the person of Jesus.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THE NEW TESTAMENT.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first four authors of the N.T. each describe <strong>the life of Jesus<\/strong> in their own way.<br \/>\nThese four books give a complete account of His birth and His public life.<br \/>\nThey describe how He taught the people, how He healed the sick, drove out demons and brought the dead back to life, until He died on a Roman cross.<\/p>\n<p>Three days after His death He rose again physically from the grave however, and he visited His direct successors several times, during a period of 40 days.<br \/>\nThe last time He was with them He blessed His followers, after which they saw Him physically ascend to heaven.<\/p>\n<p>The next book, Acts, describes <strong>the coming into existence of the first Christian church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thereafter we find several <strong>letters<\/strong>, written by different authors, addressed to different local churches in the Roman Empire of the time.<\/p>\n<p>The N.T. closes with <strong>a prophetic book<\/strong>, a vista of the time in which we are now living.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">GENERAL REMARKS:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The books of the <strong>O.T.<\/strong> were written roughly between 1550 B.C. and 400 B.C. and they were written in Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p>The books of the <strong>N.T.<\/strong> were probably written between approximately 50 and 100 A.D. and they were written in Greek.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of the Psalms, these writings originally consisted of continuous text. The text was later divided up into chapters and the sentences numbered. This facilitates looking things up.<\/p>\n<p>For example:\u00a0 the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 11, verses 28 tot 30<br \/>\n(Abbreviation: Matthew 11:28-30)<br \/>\n<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Matthew 11:28 &#8211; Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
