The New Testament begins in principle with the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.<br \/>\nThe working of the <a title=\"The Holy Spirit in the New Testament (1)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/holy-spirit-new-testament-1\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Holy Spirit in the Gospels<\/span><\/a> falls, as such, under the \u2018old covenant\u2019, of the Old Testament.<\/p>\n<p>In this study we examine the working of the Holy Spirit under the \u2018new covenant\u2019, as it is described in the Book of Acts and the letters.<br \/>\nThis is the working of the Holy Spirit since the outpouring on the Day of Pentecost and until today.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The working of the Holy Spirit for the world.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus promised a new working of the Holy Spirit, different for \u2018the world\u2019 than for the disciples.<\/p>\n<p>The Holy Spirit convinces the world.<br \/>\nJesus promised:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, <strong>I will send him to you<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWhen he comes, he will <strong>prove the world<\/strong> to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (John 16:7-8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>When the Advocate comes, <strong>whom I will send to you<\/strong> from the Father &#8211; the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father &#8211; <strong>he will testify about me<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 15:26)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus, so Jesus also gave His disciples the commission:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 <strong>you also must testify<\/strong>, for you have been with me from the beginning.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 15:27)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A disciple must only <strong>testify<\/strong>. The Holy Spirit will <strong>convince<\/strong>, for:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; no one can say, \u201cJesus is Lord,\u201d except by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 12:3)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The working of the Holy Spirit for the disciple.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus promised His <strong>disciples<\/strong> a special working of the Holy Spirit, which derives from His glorification in heaven.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, \u201cLet anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.<br \/>\n<strong>Whoever believes in me<\/strong>, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (John 7:37-38)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John remarked with respect to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>By this he meant the Spirit, whom those <strong>who believed in him<\/strong> were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since <strong>Jesus had not yet been glorified<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 7:39)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This special working of the Holy Spirit is reserved for the disciples of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>If you love me<\/strong>, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever\u00a0&#8211; <strong>the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him<\/strong>, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 14:15-17)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Holy Spirit will convince the world, but will be active in the life of the disciple in two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>with<\/strong> <\/span>the disciple,<\/li>\n<li>He will also be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in<\/strong> <\/span>him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">He will be in the disciple:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the Holy Spirit, who dwells <strong>in the heart<\/strong> of the disciple and pours the love of God out into it, as a result of which the heart is completely renewed.<br \/>\nThis is elaborated on in the study <a title=\"Discipleship (2)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/discipleship-2\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018Discipleship (2)\u2019<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">He will be with the disciple:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the Holy Spirit, of Whom Jesus said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>If you then \u2026 know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will <strong>your Father<\/strong> in heaven give the Holy Spirit <strong>to those who ask him<\/strong>!\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 11:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the Holy Spirit who works with <strong>power<\/strong>, as Jesus promised:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For John baptized with (immersed in) water, but in a few days you will be baptized (immersed) with (in) the Holy Spirit.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 1:5)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 <a title=\"The baptism in the Holy Spirit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/baptism-holy-spirit\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>you will receive power<\/strong><\/span><\/a> when the Holy Spirit <strong>comes on you<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 1:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit confirms the preaching.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAs a result of Peter\u2019s preaching on the Day of Pentecost the bystanders asked him:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Brothers, what shall we do?\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 2:37)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And Peter answered them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the <strong>gift (the present) of the Holy Spirit<\/strong> &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 2:38)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With, as a result:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about <strong>three thousand were added to their number that day<\/strong>. They devoted themselves to the apostles\u2019 teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 2:41-42)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged <strong>by the Holy Spirit<\/strong>, it increased in numbers.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 9:31)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit inspires speech:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 12:12)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then Peter, <strong>filled with the Holy Spirit<\/strong>, said to them: \u201cRulers and elders of the people! \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 4:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is written about Stephen:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>But they could not stand up against the wisdom the <strong>Spirit<\/strong> gave him as he <strong>spoke<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 6:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit teaches.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>(Jesus said) I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will <strong>guide you into all the truth<\/strong>. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will <strong>tell<\/strong> you <strong>what is yet to come<\/strong>. He will <strong>glorify<\/strong> me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 16:12-14)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>It is the Spirit who <strong>testifies<\/strong>, because the Spirit is <strong>the truth<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 John 5:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit helps with praying:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In the same way, the <strong>Spirit<\/strong> helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the <strong>Spirit h<\/strong>imself intercedes for us through wordless groans.\u00a0\u00a0 (Romans 8:26)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit works through gifts of grace.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>There are different kinds of <strong>gifts<\/strong>, but the same <strong>Spirit<\/strong> distributes them.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 12:4)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Now to each one the <strong>manifestation of the Spirit<\/strong> is given for the common good.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 12:7)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>All of them (the disciples) were <strong>filled with the Holy Spirit<\/strong> and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 2:4)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>While Peter was still speaking these words, the <strong>Holy Spirit came on all<\/strong> who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter \u2026 heard them <strong>speaking in tongues<\/strong> and <strong>praising God<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 10:44-46)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, <strong>the Holy Spirit<\/strong> <strong>said<\/strong>, \u201cSet apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 13:2)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>When Paul placed his hands on them, the <strong>Holy Spirit<\/strong> came on them, and they <strong>spoke in tongues and prophesied<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 19:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>A prophet named Agabus \u2026 said, \u201c<strong>The Holy Spirit says<\/strong>, \u2018In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 21:10-11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit performs miracles, in Jesus\u2019 Name.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Peter said, \u201cSilver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. <strong>In the name of Jesus Christ<\/strong> of Nazareth, <strong>walk<\/strong>.\u201d Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man\u2019s feet and ankles became strong.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 3:6-7)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The apostles performed many <strong>signs and wonders<\/strong> among the people. \u2026 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 5:12 and 16)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Now Stephen, a man full of God\u2019s grace and power, performed <strong>great wonders and signs<\/strong> among the people.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 6:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>When the crowds heard Philip and saw the <strong>signs<\/strong> he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was great joy in that city.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 8:6-8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Paul \u2026 said to the spirit (in the slavegirl with a spirit of divination), \u201c<strong>In the name of Jesus Christ<\/strong> I command you to come out of her!\u201d At that moment the spirit left her.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 16:18)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>General remarks:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nJesus said about the work of the Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,<br \/>\n<strong>he will guide you into all the truth.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears<\/strong>, and he will tell you what is yet to come.<br \/>\n<strong>He will glorify me (also: honour me)<\/strong> because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 16:12-14)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Holy Spirit is poured out in the heart of the disciple so that he\/she will live to Jesus\u2019 honour.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The fruit of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Honouring Jesus Christ has everything to do with the disciple\u2019s charisma. A visible sign of the love that is poured out in his heart by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>As Paul writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the <strong>benefit you reap leads to holiness<\/strong>, and the result is eternal life.\u00a0\u00a0 (Romans 6:22)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Holiness<\/strong> means: purification, purification of heart and life.<\/p>\n<p>A disciple who has become a \u2018slave of God\u2019 and stands under the authority of Jesus, will bring his use of language, behaviour in his relationships with people, and even his clothing into conformity with the character of God.<\/p>\n<p>As Paul writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable &#8211; if anything is excellent or praiseworthy &#8211; think about such things.\u00a0\u00a0 (Philippians 4:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally:<br \/>\nThe <strong>fruit<\/strong> of the Spirit is <strong>love<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Galatians 5:22a)<\/p>\n<p>This is recognised in the life of the disciple by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>joy<\/li>\n<li>peace<\/li>\n<li>forbearance\u00a0 (also: patience, perseverance, persistence)<\/li>\n<li>kindness\u00a0 (also: integrity)<\/li>\n<li>goodness\u00a0 (also: uprightness of heart and life)<\/li>\n<li>faithfulness\u00a0\u00a0 (also: trust, faith)<\/li>\n<li>gentleness<\/li>\n<li>self-control.\u00a0\u00a0 (Galatians 5:22b)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Living like this is only possible through a close relationship with Jesus, under His authority.<br \/>\nHe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am the vine; you are the branches. <strong>If you remain in me<\/strong> and I in you, you will bear <strong>much fruit; apart from me<\/strong> you can do nothing.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 15:5)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A life with Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, will result in God, the Father, receiving all honour, as Jesus intended.<br \/>\nHe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>This is to <strong>my Father\u2019s glory<\/strong>, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 15:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See too the studie <a title=\"Spiritual Gifts \u2013 definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/spiritual-gifts-definition\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018Spiritual Gifts\u2019<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Print this study as a PDF document:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/The-Holy-Spirit-in-the-N.T.-2.pdf\">The Holy Spirit in the New Testament\u00a0 (2).<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General remarks: In the study \u2018The beginning and the end of the O.T. and the N.T.\u2019\u00a0 we explained that the New Testament is named after the \u2018new covenant\u2019 in the blood of Jesus.
