Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called <strong>so that you may inherit a blessing<\/strong>.<br \/>\n(1 Peter 3:8-9)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the first part of this text Peter describes how a Christian should behave towards others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sympathetically<\/li>\n<li>compassionately and humbly<\/li>\n<li>not repaying evil with evil or insult with insult<\/li>\n<li>on the contrary, blessing others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Peter then says that a Christian is called to <strong>inherit blessing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In verse 10 he continues with the description of how a Christian should behave:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Whoever would love life and see good days<br \/>\n&#8211; must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.<br \/>\n&#8211; They must turn from evil and do good;<br \/>\n&#8211; they must seek peace and pursue it.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Peter 3:10-11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How strange that Peter summarises how a Christian should behave lovingly towards others and should bless them and then, in the middle of his discourse, remarks that a Christian is <strong>himself<\/strong> called to receive blessing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does he mean, exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">An explanation from the Greek:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Three words in the sentence are important in order to understand what Peter is saying:<br \/>\n\u2018<strong>because<\/strong> to this you were called so that you <strong>may inherit a blessing<\/strong>.\u2019:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>because<\/li>\n<li>blessing<\/li>\n<li>may inherit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Because:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nA word that is also translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>for<\/strong> to this you are called<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Greek word translated by <strong>\u2018because\u2019<\/strong> is <strong>\u2018hoti\u2019<\/strong> and it is preceded by the <strong>verb \u2018oida\u2019 conjugated as a participle<\/strong>, and which is not translated in the text.<br \/>\nThe Greek text says therefore: <strong>\u2018oida hoti\u2019<\/strong> (because) you are called to this &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Online Bijbel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/online-bijbel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OLB<\/span><\/a> translates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2018oida\u2019<\/strong> as: to know, to see, to notice, to discern<br \/>\n&#8211; conjugated as a participle: knowing(ly), (while) seeing, (while) noticing, (while) discerning<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018hoti\u2019<\/strong> as: that, because<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the translation of <strong>\u2018oida hoti\u2019<\/strong> is imported the sentence becomes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026 <strong>knowing that<\/strong> you are called to this \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>May inherit:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nHere the Greek uses the verb <strong>\u2018kleronomeo\u2019<\/strong>, translated by the OLB as: aorist, active, subjective. The OLB translates it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To receive an inheritance, to inherit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the conjugation <strong>\u2018kleronomeo\u2019<\/strong> is translated as: <strong>inherits<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLike the rich young ruler who asked Jesus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Good teacher, what must I do <strong>to inherit<\/strong> eternal life?\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 10:17)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Imported into the sentence:<\/strong> \u2026 knowing that you are called to this: that you <strong>inherit<\/strong> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Blessing:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nHere the Greek uses the <strong>verb \u2018eulogeo\u2019<\/strong> conjugated as a <strong>participle<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe OLB translates it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to praise, to bless, to laud<br \/>\n&#8211; conjugated as a participle: (while) praising, (while) blessing, (while) lauding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Imported into the sentence:<\/strong> \u2026 knowing that you are called to this: that you inherit <strong>while blessing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Alternative translation:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Bible text:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called <strong>so that you may inherit a blessing<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Peter 3:9)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>According to the alternative translations<\/strong>, as discussed above, Peter says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult.
