{"id":2130,"date":"2017-06-23T15:43:02","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=2130"},"modified":"2017-06-23T15:47:33","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:47:33","slug":"grace-definition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/grace-definition\/","title":{"rendered":"Grace &#8211; definition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this study an attempt is made to establish a definition for the concept of<strong> \u2018grace\u2019<\/strong>, because it is important to correctly understand what is meant by <strong>\u2018grace\u2019<\/strong> in the Bible.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is a definition.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A definition is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A description of the characteristics of a concept, so that it cannot be confused with another concept.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Looking for a definition of \u2018grace\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Grace\u2019<\/strong> is the translation of the Greek word:\u00a0<strong> \u2018charis\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u2018<strong>Charis\u2019<\/strong> is derived from the word <strong>\u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong> according to the OLB.<\/p>\n<p>To understand the concept of \u2018<strong>charis\/grace\u2019<\/strong> correctly it will therefore be necessary to study the meaning of the word <strong>\u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong> first.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Study of the word \u2018chairo\u2019:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Chairo\u2019<\/strong> is found in 68 Bible texts of the New Testament.<br \/>\nAccording to the OLB<strong> \u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong> is a root word and is translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to rejoice, be glad<\/li>\n<li>to rejoice exceedingly<\/li>\n<li>to be well, thrive<\/li>\n<li>in salutations<\/li>\n<li>hail!\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 27:29 \/ Mark 15:18)<\/li>\n<li>greetings\u00a0 (Matthew 26:49 \/ Matthew 28:9 \/ Luke 1:28)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(In all Bible texts it is always conjugated in the imperative mood.)<\/p>\n<p>The Greek\/Dutch dictionary translates it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to rejoice<\/li>\n<li>to be glad<\/li>\n<li>to like doing something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A few examples of \u2018chairo\u2019 in Bible texts:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>When they (the Wise Men from the east) saw the star, they <strong>were overjoyed (chairo)<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 2:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, <strong>\u201cGreetings (chairo)<\/strong>, Rabbi!\u201d and kissed him &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 26:49)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>But we had to celebrate and <strong>be glad (chairo)<\/strong>, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 15:32)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly <strong>pleased (chairo)<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 23:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Your father Abraham rejoiced (agalliaoo: to rejoice, to be happy) at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and <strong>was glad (chairo)<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 8:56).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Finally, brothers and sisters, <strong>rejoice (chairo)<\/strong>! Strive for full restoration, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (2 Corinthians 13:11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It always refers to someone <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">being<\/span> glad<\/strong>, <strong>rejoicing<\/strong>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>being told<\/strong><\/span> <strong>to be glad<\/strong>, without indicating how this is to be expressed.<br \/>\nIt usually refers to something of a moment, sometimes also to a permanent order to be glad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Chairo\u2019 indicates a mood, denotes that someone is rejoicing, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">IS glad<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Study of the word \u2018charis\u2019:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> is derived from <strong>\u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAccording to the OLB, <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> is a noun and is translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech<\/li>\n<li>good will, loving-kindness, favour<\/li>\n<li>what is due to grace<\/li>\n<li>the token or proof of grace, benefit<\/li>\n<li>thanks, (for benefits, services, favours), recompense, reward<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Greek\/Dutch dictionary translates it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>charm, beauty, sweetness, amiability<\/li>\n<li>gladness<\/li>\n<li>grace(gift) &#8211; in the N.T.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice that the OLB and the Greek\/Dutch dictionary give very different translations for the concept of <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe reason for this is probably to be found in the remark in the Greek\/Dutch dictionary that <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> is translated as <strong>\u2018grace\u2019 in the New Testament<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis gives rise to the conjecture that, through the centuries and in the Christian world, the concept of <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> has taken on a different meaning to its usual meaning in Greek.<\/p>\n<p>According to the other translations in the dictionary: charm, beauty, sweetness, amiability and gladness, <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> describes how someone is experienced as a person, without any further description.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Chairo\u2019<\/strong> describes a person\u2019s inner disposition.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> indicates how others experience that person.<\/p>\n<p>Someone<strong> \u2018is glad (chairo)\u2019<\/strong> and this is noticeable by the <strong>\u2018gladness (charis)\u2019<\/strong> that emanates from that person.<br \/>\nThe mood of someone who \u2018is glad\u2019, \u2018who is rejoicing\u2019 is thus recognisable in \u2018charm, beauty, sweetness, amiability\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> is therefore a general concept and <strong>only notices someone\u2019s amiable look<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Definition of \u2018charis\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019: indicates that someone is acting with a loving, kind disposition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And it is important to note that<strong> \u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> only reflects someone\u2019s <strong>demeanour<\/strong> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>not<\/strong> <\/span>what someone else <strong>receives<\/strong> as a result thereof.<br \/>\nFor this the Greek has the concept of <strong>\u2018charisma\u2019<\/strong> that is translated as <strong>\u2018spiritual gift\u2019<\/strong>, and that will be discussed in a following study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> refers therefore to a person\u2019s loving, kind character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> does <strong>not<\/strong> describe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what someone does when he is glad<\/li>\n<li>to whom this is directed<\/li>\n<li>what someone receives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Translation of \u2018charis\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> is generally translated as: <strong>grace<\/strong> in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<p>In view of the above-mentioned definition <strong>\u2018charis\/grace\u2019<\/strong> would be translated better as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0\u2018kindness\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And again:<strong> \u2018grace\/kindness\u2019<\/strong> only indicates a person\u2019s inner <strong>disposition<\/strong> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>not<\/strong> <\/span>what someone <strong>receives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charis\/grace\/kindness\u2019<\/strong> is a general concept and when it refers to God\u2019s behaviour it is important to realise that Gods \u2018kindness\u2019 originates from the fact that God <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>is<\/strong> <\/span><strong>love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A few Bible texts.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Greek word <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> appears in 147 verses, but it is sometimes translated by a different word than <strong>\u2018grace\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All the other translations of <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> are first given below.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some other translations of \u2018charis\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the Bible texts below the translation of<strong> \u2018charis\u2019<\/strong> is always shown in bold characters.<br \/>\nA more literal translation of the underlined section is given following the Bible text.<br \/>\nThis more literal translation is based on the OLB.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 1:30<\/strong><br \/>\nBut the angel said to her, \u201cDo not be afraid, Mary; you have found (also: meet, acquire)\u00a0 <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> with God.<br \/>\n<strong>Interpretation:\u00a0<\/strong> Do not be scared, Mary; for God has looked at you with kindness.<br \/>\nGod rejoiced when He noticed the consecration in Mary\u2019s life, as a result of which He considered her worthy to be the mother of His Son.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 2:52<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd Jesus grew in wisdom and stature (also: adulthood), and in <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> with God and man.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 6:32-33-34<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you love those who love you, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what <strong>credit (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> is that to you?<\/span> Even sinners love those who love them.<br \/>\n(<strong>literally:<\/strong> of what kind is your kindness?)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 17:9<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Will he <strong>thank (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> the servant<\/span> because he did what he was told to do?<br \/>\n<strong>(will he be kind towards his slave &#8211; literally: will he have kindness for his slave)<\/strong><br \/>\n(<strong>\u2018Charis\u2019<\/strong> is also translated as<strong> \u2018to thank\u2019<\/strong> in the following verses: Romans 6:17 &#8211; 1 Corinthians 15:57 &#8211; 2 Corinthians 2:14 &#8211; 2 Corinthians 8:16 &#8211; 2 Corinthians 9:15 &#8211; 1 Timothy 1:12 &#8211; 2 Timothy 1:3.<br \/>\nThis seems to be the best translation in these verses, even though <strong>kindness<\/strong> goes further than only being thankful, or saying thank-you.)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 2:47<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026 praising God <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and enjoying the <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> of all the people<\/span>. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.<br \/>\n<strong>(and were kind towards all the people \/ literally: and having kindness to (towards) all the people)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 24:27<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nWhen two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wanted to grant a <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span> to the Jews, he left Paul in prison.<br \/>\n<strong>(wanted to predispose him to be kind)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 25:2-3<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026 where the chief priests and the Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">They requested Festus, as a <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> to them<\/span>, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.<br \/>\n<strong>(longing for the kindness of him (Festus)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 25:9<\/strong><br \/>\nFestus, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wishing to do the Jews a <strong>favour (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span><strong>,<\/strong> said to Paul, \u201cAre you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?<br \/>\n<strong>(who wanted to be kind towards the Jews \u2026)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Romans 4:4<\/strong><br \/>\nNow to the one who works, wages are not credited as a <strong>gift (grace\/kindness)<\/strong> but as an obligation.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>1 Corinthians 10:30<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">If I take part in the meal with <strong>thankfulness (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span>, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?<br \/>\n<strong>(But if I take part on the basis of kindness (or: am a part of) someone)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>1 Corinthians 16:3<\/strong><br \/>\nThen, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with your <strong>gift (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> to Jerusalem<\/span>.<br \/>\n<strong>(to carry your kindness to Jerusalem)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 1:15<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you might <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>benefit (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span> twice.<br \/>\n<strong>(receive kindness)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 8:4<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026 hey urgently pleaded with us for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>privilege (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span> of sharing in this service to the Lord\u2019s people.<br \/>\n<strong>(kindness)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 8:6-7<\/strong><br \/>\nSo we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this act of grace (charis\/kindness)<\/span><\/strong> on your part. But since you excel in everything &#8211; in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you &#8211; see that you also excel in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>this grace of giving (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span>.<br \/>\n<strong>(this kindness)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Ephesians 4:29<\/strong><br \/>\nDo not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>benefit (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span> those who listen.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:<\/strong> \u2026 so that <strong>kindness<\/strong> should be given to those who belong.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Colossians 3:16<\/strong><br \/>\nLet the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">God with <strong>gratitude (charis\/kindness)<\/strong> in your hearts<\/span>.<br \/>\n<strong>(\u2026 with kindness (with gladness) in your heart, to God.)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Colossians 4:6<\/strong><br \/>\nLet your conversation be always <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">full of grace (charis\/kindness)<\/span><\/strong>, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.<br \/>\n<strong>(kind &#8211; literally: with kindness)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong> Hebrews 12:28<\/strong><br \/>\nTherefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">be<strong> thankful (charis\/kindness)<\/strong><\/span>, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, &#8230;<br \/>\n<strong>(be kind)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Other Greek worlds translated as grace.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>2 Bible texts are mentioned below in which different Greek words are translated as \u2018grace\u2019. In these Bible texts words are translated as \u2018grace\u2019, whereas \u2018charis\u2019 is not used in the Greek text.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 6:8<\/strong><br \/>\nNow Stephen, a man <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">full of God\u2019s <strong>grace (pistis)<\/strong> and power,<\/span> performed great wonders and signs among the people.<br \/>\n<strong>(full of faith (pistis) and power)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 1:10-11<\/strong><br \/>\nHe has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers.
