{"id":2202,"date":"2017-06-23T15:43:56","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=2202"},"modified":"2017-06-23T15:50:31","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:50:31","slug":"spiritual-gifts-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/spiritual-gifts-introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Spiritual Gifts &#8211; introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before the spiritual gifts (usually called \u2018the gifts of the Spirit\u2019) can be discussed it is necessary, first of all, to give a definition of the concept of <strong>\u2018spiritual gifts\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Looking for a definition of \u2018gift of God\u2019s grace\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>\u2018spiritual gift\u2019<\/strong> is the translation of the Greek word <strong>\u2018charisma\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAccording to the OLB <strong>\u2018charisma\u2019<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>derived from the word <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>which, in turn, is derived from <strong>\u2018charis\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>which, in turn, is derived from <strong>\u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to understand the concept of <strong>\u2018charisma\u2019<\/strong> correctly, this study &#8211; as an introduction to the concept of <strong>\u2018spiritual gifts\u2019<\/strong> &#8211; is limited to the discussion of the meaning of<strong> \u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong>, the word from which <strong>\u2018charisma\u2019<\/strong> is derived.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Word study of \u2018charizomai\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The concepts of \u2018<strong>charis\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018chairo\u2019<\/strong> must be studied first in order to understand the concept of <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong> correctly.<br \/>\nThis is expounded in the study <a title=\"Grace \u2013 definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/grace-definition\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018Grace &#8211; definition\u2019<\/span><\/a>. It is therefore necessary to read this first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charizomai\u2019<\/strong> (a verb) is found in 19 Bible texts of the New Testament according to the OLB.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>derived from <strong>\u2018charis\/kindness&#8217;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and is translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to do something pleasant or agreeable (to someone), to do a favour to, gratify<\/li>\n<li>to show one\u2019s self graciousness, kindness, benevolence<\/li>\n<li>to grant forgiveness, to pardon<\/li>\n<li>to give graciously, give freely, bestow<\/li>\n<li>to forgive<\/li>\n<li>graciously to restore one to another<\/li>\n<li>to protect a person in peril<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Greek\/Dutch dictionary translates it as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>serving, granting a favour<\/li>\n<li>giving pleasure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charizomai\u2019<\/strong> is a verb and it therefore describes an action.<br \/>\nThis action is in relationship to another person: serving someone, granting someone a favour or giving pleasure to someone.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some examples of \u2018charizomai\u2019 in Bible texts:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all &#8211; how will he not also, along with him, <strong>graciously give (charizomai)<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>us<\/strong> <\/span>all things?\u00a0\u00a0 (Romans 8:32)<br \/>\nWhat we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has <strong>freely given (charizomai)<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>us<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 2:12)<br \/>\nFor<strong> it (charizomai)<\/strong> has been granted <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>to you<\/strong><\/span> on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,\u00a0\u00a0 (Philippians 1:29)<\/p>\n<p>Bear with each other and<strong> forgive (charizomai)<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>one another<\/strong><\/span> if any of you has a grievance against someone. <strong>Forgive (charizomai)<\/strong> as the Lord <strong>forgave (charizomai)<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>you<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Colossians 3:13)<\/p>\n<p>Without now paying attention to how \u2018charizomai\u2019 is translated, an action is described in every case:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(to) them<\/li>\n<li>(to) us<\/li>\n<li>(to) you<\/li>\n<li>(to) one another \/ (to) you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Someone is always giving special attention to <strong>someone else<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAnd as \u2018charizomai\u2019 is derived from <strong>\u2018charis\/kindness\u2019<\/strong>, this always therefore refers to a gesture, prompted by<strong> the kind disposition<\/strong> of the person who reaches out to the other one.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Definition of \u2018charizomai\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Charizomai\u2019 indicates that someone, who acts from a kind disposition, directs himself specifically to someone else out of his kindness, without describing what that person receives as a result.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Summary of the concepts from which \u2018charisma\/gifts of God\u2019s grace\u2019 are derives:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018Chairo\u2019:\u00a0<\/strong> directs attention to the<strong> inner disposition<\/strong> of someone who \u2018is glad\u2019, \u2018rejoices\u2019.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2018Charis\u2019:\u00a0<\/strong> directs attention to the <strong>kind demeanour<\/strong> of someone who \u2018is glad\u2019, \u2018rejoices\u2019.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2018Charizomai\u2019: i<\/strong>ndicates that someone <strong>directs himself<\/strong>, out of this kind demeanour,<strong> to one or more persons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Discussion of the Bible texts.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All the texts in which <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong> appears are discussed below.<br \/>\nThe translation of<strong> \u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong> is always given in bold letters.<br \/>\nFollowing the Bible text, an interpretation of the underlined passage is given, or a more literal translation from the Greek.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 7:21<\/strong><br \/>\nAt that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and <strong>gave (charizomai)<\/strong> sight to many who were blind<\/span>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> \u2026 and Jesus <strong>granted<\/strong> many who were blind a <strong>favour<\/strong> to see.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 7:42<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he <strong>forgave (charizomai)<\/strong> the debts of both.<\/span> Now which of them will love him more?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> But they do not possess payment. He <strong>granted<\/strong> both of them <strong>a favour\/was kind<\/strong> towards both of them. Which of them \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Luke 7:43<\/strong><br \/>\nSimon replied, \u201cI suppose the one <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">who had the bigger debt <strong>forgiven (charizomai)<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> \u2026, to whom he <strong>granted<\/strong> the biggest <strong>favour<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 3:14<\/strong><br \/>\nYou disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer <strong>be released (charizomai)<\/strong> to you.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 25:11<\/strong><br \/>\nIf, however, I (Paul) am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no one has the right <strong>to hand me over (charizomai)<\/strong> to them. I appeal to Caesar!<\/span>\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:<\/strong> \u2026 then no one can <strong>grant a favour<\/strong> to them: I appeal to Caesar!<br \/>\n<strong>Remark:<\/strong> Which favour was to be granted \u2018to them\u2019 is not mentioned in the Greek text.<br \/>\nWhat is to be understood from the context: that they wanted to hand Paul over to the Pharisees, has been added to the translation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 25:16<\/strong><br \/>\n(Festus said:) \u201cI told them that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it is not the Roman custom<strong> to hand over (charizomai)<\/strong> anyone \u2026<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 it is not the Roman custom to <strong>grant<\/strong> a person<strong> a favour<\/strong> for destruction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Acts 27:24<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026 and said, \u2018Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and God has <strong>graciously given (charizomai)<\/strong> you the lives of all who sail with you<\/span>.\u2019<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> \u2026 and see, God <strong>grants a favour<\/strong> to you and all who sail with you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Romans 8:32<\/strong><br \/>\nHe who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all &#8211; how will he not also, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">along with him, <strong>graciously give (charizomai)<\/strong> us all things?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> \u2026 not also, together with him, <strong>grant a favour<\/strong> to us all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>1 Corinthians 2:12<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what God <strong>has freely given (charizomai)<\/strong> us<\/span>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:\u00a0<\/strong> \u2026, what <strong>favour<\/strong> has been <strong>granted<\/strong> us by God.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 2:6-7<\/strong><br \/>\nThe punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you ought <strong>to forgive (charizomai)<\/strong> and comfort him<\/span>, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Interpretation:<\/strong> Now instead, you ought to <strong>show<\/strong> him <strong>kindness<\/strong> and comfort him, \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 2:8 and 10-11<\/strong><br \/>\nI urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Anyone you <strong>forgive (charizomai)<\/strong>, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven &#8211; if there was anything to forgive (charizomai) &#8211; I <strong>have forgiven (charizomai)<\/strong> in the sight of Christ for your sake<\/span>, in order that Satan might not outwit us.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally (verse 10):\u00a0<\/strong> What you <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong> to anyone, I do too, for what I than also <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019,<\/strong> who\/what I <strong>\u2018charizomai\u2019<\/strong>, on your behalf in the sight of Christ, \u2026<br \/>\n<strong>Interpretation:\u00a0<\/strong> If you <strong>are kind<\/strong> towards someone, I am too, for if I <strong>have been kind<\/strong> towards someone, I <strong>have been kind<\/strong> because of you, in the sight of Christ.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>2 Corinthians 12:13<\/strong><br \/>\nHow were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you? <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Forgive (charizomai)<\/strong> me this wrong!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Interpretation:\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>Show<\/strong> me your <strong>kindness<\/strong>, in spite of this injustice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Galatians 3:18<\/strong><br \/>\nFor if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but God in his <strong>grace gave (charizomai)<\/strong> it to Abraham through a promise<\/span>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Literally:<\/strong> \u2026 by a promise God<strong> showed his favour<\/strong> to Abraham.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Ephesians 4:32<\/strong><br \/>\nBe kind and compassionate to one another, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>forgiving (charizomai)<\/strong> each other, just as in Christ God <strong>forgave (charizomai)<\/strong> you<\/span>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Interpretation:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 <strong>subserviant<\/strong> to one another, as God in Christ <strong>has shown you kindness.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Philippians 1:29-30<\/strong><br \/>\nFor it <strong>has been granted (charizomai) (showed favour, given pleasure)<\/strong> to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Philippians 2:9<\/strong><br \/>\nTherefore God exalted him to the highest place and <strong>gave (charizomai)<\/strong> him the name (also: might) that is above every name (also: might), \u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Colossians 2:13<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">God made you alive with Christ.
