Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.<br \/>\n(Hebrews 13:7)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Have confidence in your <strong>leaders<\/strong> and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.\u00a0\u00a0 (Hebrews 13:17)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Greet all your <strong>leaders<\/strong> and all the Lord\u2019s people. Those from Italy send you their greetings.\u00a0\u00a0 (Hebrews 13:24)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation of the word.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>noun \u2018leaders\u2019<\/strong> is the translation of the Greek verb <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Online Bijbel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/online-bijbel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OLB<\/span><\/a> translates \u2018hegeomai\u2019 as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to lead &#8211; to go before, to be a leader<\/li>\n<li>to be of the opinion, to accept, to suppose<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a title=\"Bibliography\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/bibliography\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Greek\/Dutch dictionary<\/span><\/a> translates <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> (among other things) as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to go first, to show the way<\/li>\n<li>to form the vanguard, to be in charge, to lead<\/li>\n<li>to be of the opinion, to believe, to hold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will be noticed that, in both cases, a double meaning is given:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> First explanation:<\/strong> to go first, to lead, to be a leader, to be in charge, to rule, to go before, to show the way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Second explanation:<\/strong> to be of the opinion, to accept, to suppose, to believe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both meanings are examined, in order to understand the concept of <strong>\u2018leaders\u2019<\/strong> in the above-mentioned texts correctly.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation of the concept of \u2018leaders\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The verb <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> appears in 27 verses of the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>Because the conjugation of a verb is important for the interpretation of the text, all the texts in which <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> is conjugated in the same way as in Hebrews 13 &#8211; i.e. in the present tense, as a participle &#8211; are reproduced below.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">First explanation: to go first, to lead, to be a leader, to be in charge, to rule, to go before, to show the way.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the<strong> rulers (hegemoon)<\/strong> of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler <strong>(hegeomai = literally: leading person)<\/strong> who will shepherd my people Israel. (Matthew 2:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This verse refers initially to <strong>rulers<\/strong>, as the translation of the Greek <strong>\u2018hegemoon\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Hegemoon\u2019<\/strong> is derived from <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> and appears in 21 texts, translated 20 times as <strong>\u2018governor(s)\u2019<\/strong> and only in Matthew 2:6 a \u2018rulers\u2019.<br \/>\nGovernors <strong>(hegemoon)<\/strong> were officials who administered a province on behalf of and under the authority of the Roman emperor.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2018Hegemoon\u2019<\/strong> is described as: a procurator, an official attached to a proconsul with supervision of the imperial revenues.<br \/>\nGovernors acted independently, under authority granted by those in charge.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> \u2018ruler\u2019 (hegeomai = literally: leading person)<\/strong> foretold in Matthew 2:6 is a ruler, who <strong>will not rule<\/strong> as \u2018hegemoon\u2019, but who will <strong>shepherd<\/strong> the people of Israel.<br \/>\nThis \u2018ruler\u2019 is Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>As the Son of God Jesus acted with authority from God as \u2018hegemoon\/governor\u2019, over sickness and death and over the realm of darkness.<br \/>\nHowever Jesus said of Himself <strong>as \u2018ruler\u2019 of the people<\/strong> (literally: leading person of the people, or: He who leads the people):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am among you as <strong>one who serves<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 22:27)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is precisely what Jesus also expects of leaders in the church.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the <strong>one who rules (hegeomai = literally: the leading person)<\/strong> like the one who serves.\u00a0 (Luke 22:26)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A \u2018hegeomai-leader is not a ruler, but someone who goes in front, shows the way, forms the vanguard and who sets himself up as a servant, as someone who serves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like Joseph. Stephen says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>So Pharaoh made him <strong>ruler (hegeomai = literally: leading person)<\/strong> over Egypt and all his palace.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 7:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joseph was appointed &#8211; with the authority of a viceroy &#8211; to rescue the Egyptian people from the famine and appointed head over Pharaoh\u2019s household.<br \/>\nHe is <strong>not<\/strong> regarded as a<strong> \u2018hegemoon\u2019<\/strong>, a ruler, in this verse, however, <strong>but<\/strong> as a <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pharaoh\u2019s commission was:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit (literally: to kiss you) <strong>to (literally: on the grounds of, according to)<\/strong> your <strong>orders (literally: mouth)<\/strong> \u2026\u00a0 (Genesis 41:40)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This can also be translated literally as: \u2026 and my whole people will be grateful to you on the grounds of what you have said.<\/p>\n<p>In the text from Acts Stephen remarks that Joseph was not appointed as an absolute ruler, but as someone who was given the task of rescuing the people from the famine, in accordance with the advice that God had given him.<br \/>\nNor did he rule over Pharaoh\u2019s household, but was given the task of giving leadership to his household.<br \/>\nIn that sense Joseph was a \u2018hegeomai-leader\u2019 who was given the task of serving.<br \/>\nAnother example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the <strong>chief speaker (hegeomai<\/strong>).\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 14:12)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The word<\/strong> is in the genitive and could therefore have been translated as: <strong>of<\/strong> the word.<br \/>\nPaul was called Hermes, because he was <strong>\u2018the leader\u2019, \u2018the leading person\u2019<\/strong> of the word.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Second explanation: to be of the opinion, to accept, to suppose, to believe.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were<strong> leaders (hegeomai)<\/strong> among the believers.\u00a0 (Acts 15:22)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Literally:<\/strong> \u2026 leading men among the brethren.<br \/>\nPeople who are \u2018in leadership\u2019 in the church, (put otherwise: to be a leader, to go before) have <strong>no authority on account of their position<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLeaders in the church receive their position because the church members <strong>grant them <a title=\"1 Corinthians 12:28 \u2013 God has placed in the church\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/1-corinthians-1228-god-placed\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the necessary authority<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>grant<\/strong> is also the background of the following two texts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility <strong>value (hegeomai)<\/strong> others above yourselves \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Philippians 2:3)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Humbly <strong>valuing<\/strong> others above oneself does not mean that they are also so much grander, but that one behaves humbly towards them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Their <strong>idea (hegeomai)<\/strong> of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.\u00a0\u00a0 (2 Peter 2:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter is writing here about people who live dissolute lives.<br \/>\nThey think that their feasts are the highest form of pleasure, without being conscious of the fact that their lifestyle is leading to their downfall.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Summarised:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As shown by the explanations above, the verb <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> has a double meaning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To go before, to be a leader\u00a0 (literally: to be a leading person)<\/li>\n<li>To be esteemed\u00a0 (literally: being esteemed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Leaders:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Up to now the meaning of the verb <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> has been sketched as it is translated in the Epistle to the Hebrews, as \u2018leaders\u2019.<br \/>\nIn what follows the meaning of the concept of\u00a0 a leader as \u2018minister\u2019, or \u2018pastor\u2019 in the church is explored.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1.- What is meant by leaders in Hebrews 13?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAs the translation of <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> as \u2018leaders\u2019 says, they go before.<br \/>\nThe \u2018leaders\u2019 go before the church members, in word and deed, along the way of a life under the authority of Jesus Christ and His Word.<br \/>\nThey are an example to the church members by their behaviour.<br \/>\n<strong>Just like Jesus says of Himself, \u2018leaders\u2019 should set themselves up as \u2018servants\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the interpretation of <strong>\u2018hegeomai\u2019<\/strong> leaders do not occupy a position of authority, but authority is granted to them by the church members.<br \/>\nAccording to Jesus\u2019 commission they are also designated to serve.<br \/>\nConsider the declaration of \u2018placed\/designated\u2019 in the text from <a title=\"1 Corinthians 12:28 \u2013 Structure of the local church\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/1-corinthians-1228-structure-local-church\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1 Corinthians 12:28<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Hegeomai\u2019<\/strong>, translated as \u2018leaders\u2019 in the texts from Hebrews 13, can also be translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>those who are esteemed in the church<\/li>\n<li>those who receive esteem in the church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2.- Who are these \u2018leaders\u2019?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIn Hebrews 13 they are people who receive esteem on the grounds of their behaviour.<br \/>\nIn the first place they will be those who are designated by God for a place in the organisation of the church.<br \/>\nMore generally, they are those who are esteemed in the church and to whom authority is granted, on the grounds of their spiritual life in a relationship with Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that the <strong>plural<\/strong> is always used in Hebrews 13.<br \/>\nThe fact that \u2018hegeomai\u2019 is translated as \u2018leaders\u2019 is understandable.
