{"id":2542,"date":"2018-06-14T11:13:37","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T10:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=2542"},"modified":"2018-11-08T11:38:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T10:38:51","slug":"word-study-little-greek-words-epi-en-eis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/word-study-little-greek-words-epi-en-eis\/","title":{"rendered":"Word study of the little Greek words epi, en, eis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this rather more technical study, attention is concentrated on the correct interpretation of a Bible text.<br \/>\nThis concerns the translation of the words<strong> \u2018epi\u2019,\u2018en\u2019, \u2018eis\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAll these three words are often translated as <strong>\u2018in\u2019<\/strong>, sometimes as <strong>\u2018on\u2019<\/strong>, <strong>\u2018to\u2019<\/strong>, or <strong>\u2018with\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTheir meaning is usually understood correctly as a result of the context of the sentence.<br \/>\nNevertheless, in a number of texts, the true and deeper meaning of the Greek is lost in translation, so that what is meant is unable to be fully understood.<\/p>\n<p>This is the reason for an explanation of the different little Greek words, whereby in each case, a number of Bible texts are referred.<\/p>\n<p>In the explanation of the words <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018eis\u2019<\/strong> in particular, it is interesting to pause to consider the meaning of the Greek.<br \/>\nOnce in a while is referenced to a separate study, because the correct interpretation of the Greek is important in order to understand the text correctly.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation of the word \u2018epi\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a title=\"Online Bijbel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/online-bijbel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OLB<\/span><\/a><strong> \u2018epi\u2019<\/strong> is a preposition.<\/p>\n<p>It is translated in different ways depending on the declension used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(acc) to, over, on, at, across, against<\/li>\n<li>(dat) of position, on, at, by, over, against<\/li>\n<li>(gen) upon, on, at, by, before<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018Epi\u2019<\/strong> indicated a direction for an activity (the verb).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some of the 772 Bible texts:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nPlus the <strong>accusative<\/strong> (indicates the direct object):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And he directed the people to sit down <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> the grass.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 14:19)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Spirit of the Lord is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> me, because he has anointed me\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 4:18)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Go to the house of Judas <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> Straight Street &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 9:11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; and many people believed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in (epi)<\/strong><\/span> the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 9:11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus the <strong>dative<\/strong> (indicates the indirect object):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>It is written: \u2018Man shall not live <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> bread alone, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 4:4)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> an old garment, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 9:16)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>In (epi)<\/strong><\/span> them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 13:14)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>They were amazed <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at (epi<\/span>)<\/strong> his teaching, because his words had authority.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 4:32)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>There was a written notice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>above (epi)<\/strong><\/span> him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 23:38)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then they ordered them not to speak <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in (epi)<\/strong><\/span> the name of Jesus, and let them go.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 5:40)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus the <strong>genitive<\/strong> (the word is attached to, or the possession of another element in the sentence):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do not store up for yourselves treasures <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>on (epi)<\/strong><\/span> earth, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 6:19)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 but you teach the way of God <strong>i<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">n accordance with (epi)<\/span><\/strong> the truth.\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 12:14)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation of the word \u2018en\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the OLB <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> is a primary preposition<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in, by, with etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A few translations which occur frequently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>in<\/strong> &#8211; 1.902 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>by<\/strong> &#8211; 163 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>with<\/strong> &#8211; 140 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>among<\/strong> &#8211; 117 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>at<\/strong> &#8211; 113 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>on<\/strong> &#8211; 62 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>through<\/strong> &#8211; 39 texts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The little Greek word <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> draws attention to <strong>the place or status (in) which an action takes place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some of the 2.098 Bible texts:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nRemember that the little word that is underlined indicates the place where the action takes place.<br \/>\nIn many texts it would actually be clearer to translate the Greek <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> as<strong> \u2018in\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>After Jesus was born in Bethlehem <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> Judea, during the time of King Herod, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 2:1)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">by (en)<\/span><\/strong> heaven, for it is God\u2019s throne; \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 5:34)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am sending you out like sheep <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">among (en)<\/span><\/strong> wolves. All things are yours, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (1Corinthians 3:21)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Explanation of the word \u2018eis\u2019:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the OLB,<strong> \u2018eis\u2019<\/strong> is a primary preposition.<\/p>\n<p>To be translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>into, unto, to, towards, for, among<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The little word <strong>\u2018eis\u2019<\/strong> supposes there to be <strong>a movement from the outside to, or into the place where the action takes place<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A few translations which occur frequently, to be interpreted as <strong>\u2018into\u2019<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>into<\/strong> &#8211; 573 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>to<\/strong> &#8211; 281 texts<\/li>\n<li><strong>unto<\/strong> &#8211; 207 texts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Some of the 1.473 Bible texts:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nRemember that the little word that is underlined indicates a movement towards the place of the action.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>On coming <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 2:11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jesus sent him (the blind man who was healed) home, saying, \u201cDon\u2019t even go <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">into (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the village.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 8:26)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The curtain of the temple was torn <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (eis)<\/span><\/strong> two from top to bottom.\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 15:38)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>And the news about him spread <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">throughout (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the surrounding area.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 4:37)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to (eis)<\/span><\/strong> repentance.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 5:32)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>And no one pours new wine <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">into (eis)<\/span><\/strong> old wineskins.\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 5:37)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe son said to him, \u2018Father, I have sinned <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">against (eis)<\/span><\/strong> heaven and against you.
