{"id":2633,"date":"2018-07-05T19:41:46","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T18:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=2633"},"modified":"2018-11-08T11:42:05","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T10:42:05","slug":"name-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/name-name\/","title":{"rendered":"In my name \/ In the name of"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this study we examine the meaning of <strong>\u2018in my name\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018in the name of\u2019<\/strong>, whereby <strong>\u2018in\u2019<\/strong> is the translation of different Greek words, as explained in the \u2018<a title=\"Word study of the little Greek words epi, en, eis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/word-study-little-greek-words-epi-en-eis\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Word study<\/span><\/a> of the little Greek words epi, en, eis\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Each of these little Greek words has its own meaning, which can influence the interpretation of different Bible texts.<br \/>\nIn this study we attempt to ascertain their meaning.<\/p>\n<p>In order to understand the Bible texts correctly it is important to know what <strong>\u2018the name\u2019<\/strong> means.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Word study of: the name.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u2018The name\u2019<\/strong> is the translation of the Greek <strong>\u2018onoma\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek\/Dutch dictionary translates <strong>\u2018onoma\u2019<\/strong> as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>name<\/li>\n<li>word, expression<\/li>\n<li>reputation, title, dignity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is more to this, therefore, than simply someone\u2019s name, for <strong>\u2018onoma\u2019<\/strong> also indicates who the person is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>word: what someone says<\/li>\n<li>reputation: the praise and honour someone receives from others<\/li>\n<li>title: that is given to someone and under which a function is exercised<\/li>\n<li>dignity: the manner in which someone behaves in life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">All the Bible texts containing \u2018in my name\u2019 and \u2018in the name of\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All the texts quoted below are from the NIV translation, subdivided according to the Greek word used, and translated as <strong>\u2018in\u2019<\/strong>, in the expressions <strong>\u2018in my name\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018in the name of\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1. All the Bible texts in which \u2018in\u2019 is the translation of \u2018epi\u2019.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And whoever welcomes one such child <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in (epi)<\/strong><\/span> my name (authority) welcomes me.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 18:5 \/ Mark 9:37 \/ Luke 9:48)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cDo not stop him,\u201d Jesus said. \u201cFor no one who does a miracle<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> in (epi)<\/strong><\/span> my name (authority) can in the next moment say anything bad about me, \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 9:39)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>They (the Sanhedrin) called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (epi)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of Jesus, and let them go.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 5:40)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek word <strong>\u2018epi\u2019<\/strong> and the <strong>declension<\/strong> used for <strong>\u2018the name\u2019<\/strong> (the dative in every case here) adds\u00a0 clarification to the preceding act:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> receiving a child\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 (Matthew 18:5 \/ Mark 9:37 \/ Luke 9:48)<br \/>\nOnly those who receive a child as a present from Jesus, receive Him in the child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>performing a miracle\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 (Mark 9:39)<br \/>\nWhoever does something in the authority of Jesus will not be able to speak ill of Jesus afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> forbidding to speak\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 (Acts 5:40)<br \/>\nThe apostles are not forbidden to say anything at all.<br \/>\nThey are only forbidden to speak in the name of Jesus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The emphasis lies therefore on the act.<br \/>\nThe addition \u2018in the name\u2019 clarifies, or limits, <strong>the disposition<\/strong> from which the act takes place.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. All the Bible texts in which \u2018in\u2019 is the translation of \u2018eis\u2019.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For where two or three gather <strong>in (eis)<\/strong> my name (authority), there am I with them.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 18:20)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek <strong>\u2018eis\u2019<\/strong> presupposes a <strong>removal to the place<\/strong> where the act takes place.<br \/>\nOne could say that one is <strong>seeking the authority<\/strong> in the meeting \u2013 the will of Jesus Christ and that one wishes to place oneself under His authority in the decision making.<\/p>\n<p>See the study \u20182 or 3 witnesses\u2019 for further explanation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Texts in which \u2018in\u2019 is the translation of \u2018eis\u2019, which are discussed in other studies:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nTwo texts which are discussed separately in the study: <a title=\"Believing in Jesus Christ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/believing-jesus-christ\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Believing in Jesus Christ<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 because they have not believed <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of God\u2019s one and only Son.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 3:18)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>I write these things to you who believe <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.\u00a0\u00a0 (1 John 5:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few texts which are discussed separately in the study: <a title=\"Baptism \u2013 in the New Testament\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/baptism-new-testament\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Baptize in the New Testament<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 28:19-20)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 they had simply been baptized <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (eis)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Lord Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 8:16)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>On hearing this, they were baptized <strong>in (eis)<\/strong> the name (authority) of the Lord Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 19:5)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Were you baptized <strong>in (eis)<\/strong> the name (authority) of Paul?\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 1:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 so no one can say that you were baptised <strong>in (eis)<\/strong> my name (authority).\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Corinthians 1:15)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3. All the Bible texts in which \u2018in\u2019 is the translation of \u2018en\u2019.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe little Greek word <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> indicates <strong>the place where an act takes place<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThere are very many Bible texts in which the Greek <strong>\u2018en\u2019<\/strong> is translated as<strong> \u2018in\u2019<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe texts quoted below are only those in which the emphasis lies on the fact that the act takes place \u2018in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ or of God\u2019.<br \/>\nIn other words: <strong>in the authority of Jesus Christ or of God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In effect, <strong>\u2018In the name of Jesus\u2019<\/strong> means: <strong>(standing) in the authority of Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With reference to the driving out of evil spirits:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And these signs will accompany those who believe: <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In (en)<\/span><\/strong> my name (authority) they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 16:17)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When a believer drives evil spirits out <strong>\u2018in the name of\u2019<\/strong>, this means that he\/she <strong>acts on the authority<\/strong> that Jesus gives him\/her in the specific situation.<\/p>\n<p>With reference to prayer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And I will do whatever you ask <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my name (authority), so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.<br \/>\n(John 14:13\/14:14\/15:16\/16:24)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my name (authority).\u00a0\u00a0 (John 16:23)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Only that which is prayed for <strong>in the authority<\/strong> of Jesus will be received.<br \/>\nThis means therefore, when that which is requested is in accordance with His will.<\/p>\n<p>Living under authority:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I have come <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my Father\u2019s name (authority), and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> his own name (authority), you will accept him.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 5:43)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Jesus says that He has come <strong>\u2018in the name of His Father\u2019,<\/strong> this means that Jesus acts <strong>on the authority<\/strong> the Father has given Him.<br \/>\nWhen He says that someone comes <strong>\u2018in his own name\u2019<\/strong>, this means that this person acts under his own authority and has no other authority above him, to whom he has to give account.<\/p>\n<p>Remember too, in the texts quoted below, that in the expression <strong>\u2018in the name\u2019<\/strong>, the little word\u00a0 <strong>\u2018in\u2019<\/strong> indicates the place where the act takes place, i.e. <strong>in Jesus<\/strong> or <strong>in His authority<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>Standing<\/strong> or <strong>acting in His authority<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my name (authority) because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.\u00a0\u00a0 (Mark 9:41)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> his name (authority).\u00a0\u00a0 (John 2:23)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my name (authority), will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.\u00a0\u00a0 (John 14:26)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, \u201cHosanna to the Son of David!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBlessed is he who comes <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Lord!\u201d \u201cHosanna in the highest heaven!\u201d<br \/>\n(Matthew 21:9\/23:39 \/ Mark 11:9 \/ Luke 13:35\/19:38 \/ John 12:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Jesus answered, \u201cI did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> my Father\u2019s name (authority) testify about me, \u2026<br \/>\n(John 10:25)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> his name (authority).\u00a0\u00a0 (John 20:31)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then Peter said, \u201cSilver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 3:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> (authority) the name of Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 9:27 \/ 9:28)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, \u201c<strong>In (en)<\/strong> the name (authority) of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!\u201d At that moment the spirit left her.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 16:18)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of our Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 (Ephesians 5:20)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, \u2026<br \/>\n(Philippians\u00a0 2:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.\u00a0\u00a0 (Colossians 3:17)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In (en)<\/span><\/strong> the name (authority) of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.\u00a0\u00a0 (2 Thessalonians 3:16)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Is anyone among you sick?
