{"id":2738,"date":"2018-09-27T08:41:33","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T07:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=2738"},"modified":"2019-02-22T20:47:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T19:47:31","slug":"baptism-water-holy-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/baptism-water-holy-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"Baptism &#8211; in water and in the Holy Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this study the meaning of the concept of baptism in the New Testament is examined, as a sequel to the study: <a title=\"Baptism \u2013 word study\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/baptism-word-study\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Baptism &#8211; word study<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Water baptism or immersion in water.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Water baptism illustrates <a title=\"Conversion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/conversion\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">conversion<\/span><\/a> and <a title=\"Discipleship (1)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/discipleship-1\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">discipleship<\/span><\/a>.<br \/>\nIt is the baptismal candidate\u2019s public confession that he\/she wishes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Discipleship (2)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/discipleship-2\/\">to live as a disciple<\/a><\/span> and follower of Jesus Christ, under His dominion and authority.<\/p>\n<p>In view of the meaning of the Greek word<strong> \u2018baptizo\u2019<\/strong>, at his\/her baptism the baptismal candidate is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> immersed in water,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>with the underlying thought that he\/she <strong>remains immersed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the image of complete release from life as it was prior to conversion, by dying with Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Paul writes about baptism (immersion):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Or don\u2019t you know that all of us who were baptized <strong>into (<a title=\"Word study of the little Greek words epi, en, eis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/word-study-little-greek-words-epi-en-eis\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eis: into<\/span><\/a>) Christ Jesus were baptized into his death<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>We were therefore buried with him (Jesus) through <strong>baptism (immersion)<\/strong> into (eis) death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.\u00a0\u00a0 (Romans 6:2-4)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As <a title=\"Believing in Jesus Christ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/believing-jesus-christ\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">someone went to Jesus<\/span><\/a> to receive forgiveness of sins and to lay his\/her future in His hands, he\/she <strong>goes to<\/strong> the water of baptism.<\/p>\n<p>Being <strong>immersed<\/strong> is dying to the life led prior to conversion.<br \/>\nThe <strong>old life<\/strong> has to die completely, and <strong>remain immersed<\/strong> in that sense.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever dies with Jesus will also <strong>rise<\/strong> with Him (come out of the water) <strong>as a new creation<\/strong>, with a different way of life, in accordance with the teaching of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Coming up again out of the water also signifies therefore:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 just as <strong>Christ was raised from the dead<\/strong> through the glory of the Father, we too may live <strong>a new life<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Romans 6:4)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Therefore, if <strong>anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come<\/strong>: The <strong>old has gone<\/strong>, the <strong>new is here<\/strong>! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.\u00a0\u00a0 (2 Corinthians 5:17-18)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230;for all of you were baptized into Christ <strong>have clothed yourselves with Christ<\/strong>. \u00a0 (Galatians 3:27)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whoever has become a new creation is placed before the tremendous challenge of radiating Jesus Christ in the world in word and deed.<br \/>\nHe\/she will have to discover what is expected from him\/her in the new life, in God\u2019s Kingdom.<br \/>\nThe Bible is the only handbook in this respect, to discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how He meant life in fellowship with Him to be.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The baptism in the Spirit or immersion in the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus said of immersion in the Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">clothed<\/span> with power<\/strong> from on high.<br \/>\n(Luke 24:49)<\/em><br \/>\n(<strong>clothed<\/strong> &#8211; literally: to enter into \u2013 to sink into a piece of clothing)<br \/>\n(<strong>a more literal translation<\/strong>: \u2026 until you are sunk, or have entered into the power from heaven)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>John <strong>baptised with (immersed in)<\/strong> water, but in a few days you will be baptized<strong> with the Holy Spirit (immersed in the Holy Spirit)<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 1:5)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>You will receive power<\/strong> when <strong>the Holy Spirit comes on you<\/strong> \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Acts 1:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A disciple of Jesus is <strong>clothed<\/strong> with divine <strong>power<\/strong> from heaven by <strong>immersion in the Holy Spirit,<\/strong> or, expressed otherwise, when the Holy Spirit comes <strong>on<\/strong> him\/her.<\/p>\n<p>Here too the meaning is that the disciple<strong> remains immersed<\/strong>, i.e. that he\/she <strong>lives<\/strong> in the power of the Holy Spirit and <strong>always remains clothed<\/strong> with this power.<br \/>\nA daily point of interest.<\/p>\n<p>See also the studies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Baptism \u2013 in the New Testament\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/baptism-new-testament\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Baptism &#8211; in the New Testament<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"The baptism in the Holy Spirit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/baptism-holy-spirit\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The baptism in the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"John 3:3-5 \u2013 Conversion and discipleship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/john-33-5-conversion-discipleship\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Entering into the Kingdom of God.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Studies in preparation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/studies-preparation\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Armour of God.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Print this study as a PDF document:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Baptism-in-water-and-in-the-Holy-Spirit.pdf\">Baptism &#8211; in water and in the Holy Spirit.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this study the meaning of the concept of baptism in the New Testament is examined, as a sequel to the study: Baptism &#8211; word study.
