The context.<\/span><\/h3>\n

In chapters 5 to 7 of the Gospel according to Matthew, which are called The Sermon on the Mount, he gives a summary of the teaching of Jesus, who came to bring the law to its full fulfilment<\/span><\/a>.
\nIn chapter 5 Jesus says repeatedly: \u201cYou have heard<\/strong> that it was said \u2026\u201d, and He then refers to a passage from the law, which He supplements with the words: \u201cBut I tell you \u2026\u201d<\/strong>.
\nIn this way Jesus makes the spirit of the law<\/strong> clear, as in the example of the man who is already committing adultery in his heart by looking at a woman lustfully (verse 28).<\/p>\n

In this context Jesus says:<\/p>\n

It has been said, \u2018Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 5:31)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But I tell you<\/strong> that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,<\/strong> makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 5:32)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nAnswering the question of the Pharisees concerning divorce and why Moses commanded that a letter of divorce be given to the women, He says:<\/p>\n

Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning<\/strong>.

And He then repeats what He also says in chapter 5:32:<\/p>\n

Mark and Luke also mention Jesus\u2019 declaration concerning divorce:<\/p>\n
