{"id":704,"date":"2014-06-12T20:18:20","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T19:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/?p=704"},"modified":"2014-06-13T10:09:29","modified_gmt":"2014-06-13T09:09:29","slug":"angels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delevensschool.org\/en\/angels\/","title":{"rendered":"Angels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bible opens with the sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.\u00a0\u00a0 (Genesis 1:1)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.manuelforlife.org\/en\/topics\/dig-deeper\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The creation of the world<\/span><\/a> is discussed extensively in a separate study.<br \/>\nHow God created heaven is not revealed in the Bible.<br \/>\nWhat is known is that heaven is populated by beings created by God.<br \/>\nWe come across them in the Bible with three names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Angels<\/li>\n<li>Cherubs<\/li>\n<li>Seraphs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>More is known about the angels than about the others.<br \/>\nThe Hebrew word<strong> \u2018malak\u2019<\/strong>, which is translated as \u2018angel\u2019, appears in 197 verses of the Bible.<br \/>\nThe Greek word <strong>\u2018aggelos\u2019<\/strong>, which is translated as \u2018angel\u2019, appears in 173 verses of the Bible.<br \/>\n<strong>The translation from both languages is: messenger, angel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is rather special that the words <strong>\u2018malak\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018aggelos\u2019<\/strong> are translated both as <strong>angel<\/strong> and as <strong>messenger<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe translations \u2018messenger\u2019 and \u2018ambassador\u2019 do in fact appear frequently in the Old Testament.<\/p>\n<p>Two examples of <strong>the translation \u2018messenger\u2019<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then Saul sent <strong>messengers (malak)<\/strong> to Jesse and said, \u201cSend me your son David, who is with the sheep.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (1 Samuel 16:19)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>(Jesus said of John the Baptist) &#8211; This is the one about whom it is written: I will send my <strong>messenger (aggelos)<\/strong> ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 7:27)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This emphasizes the fact that angels act as God\u2019s messengers.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are heavenly messengers.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Angels act frequently as God\u2019s messengers in the Bible.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>On the twenty-fourth day of the first month \u2026 I looked up and there before me was <strong>a man<\/strong> <strong>dressed in linen<\/strong>, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. \u2026 <strong>He said<\/strong>, \u201cDaniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Daniel 10:4-6, 11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>(Zechariah the priest offered a sacrifice in the temple) Then <strong>an angel of the Lord appeared to him<\/strong>, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. <strong>But the angel said to him<\/strong>: \u201cDo not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 1:11-13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>In the sixth month of Elizabeth\u2019s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin\u2019s name was Mary. \u2026 <strong>But the angel said to her<\/strong>, \u2026 \u201cYou will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Luke 1:26-27,30-31)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are also warriors.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God is called <strong>the Lord Almighty<\/strong> in 246 verses of the Bible in the Old Testament.<br \/>\n<strong>Almighty<\/strong> is translated as: <strong>that which is going out (to war), army, waging war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>God told the prophet Nathan: \u201cNow then, tell my servant David, \u2018This is what <strong>the LORD Almighty<\/strong> says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.\u00a0\u00a0 (2 Samuel 7:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>(The angel said to Daniel) But <strong>the prince of the Persian kingdom<\/strong> resisted me twenty-one days. Then <strong>Michael, one of the chief princes<\/strong>, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.\u00a0\u00a0 (Daniel 10:13)<br \/>\n<\/em>(see also: <a title=\"Ezekiel 28:11 \u2013 The king of Tyre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/ezekiel-2811-king-tyre\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ezekiel 28:11 &#8211; The king of Tyre<\/span><\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels play an important role on the world stage.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The angel who spoke to Daniel said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Soon I will return <strong>to fight against the prince of Persia<\/strong>, and when I go, <strong>the prince of Greece will come<\/strong>; \u2026\u00a0\u00a0 (Daniel 10:20)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I (the angel Michael) <strong>took my stand to support and protect him<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Daniel 11:1)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The result of this was that, at the political level, the king of Persia gave orders for the resumption of the reconstruction of Jerusalem and of the temple, and for the return of the temple treasures.<br \/>\nHe confirmed this with the words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence.\u00a0\u00a0 (Ezra 6:12)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Then<strong> war broke out in heaven<\/strong>. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon (that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan \u2013 verse 9), and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.\u00a0\u00a0 (Revelation 12:7-8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are in submission to Jesus.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus, as the Son of God, is above the angels, for:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To which of the angels did God ever say, \u201cSit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Hebrews 1:13)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are at God\u2019s and Jesus\u2019 command.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>They carry out God\u2019s and Jesus\u2019 commands:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Praise the LORD, you <strong>his angels<\/strong>, you mighty ones who do his bidding, <strong>who obey his word<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Psalm 103:20)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>For he will <strong>command his angels<\/strong> concerning you to guard you in all your ways.\u00a0\u00a0 (Psalm 91:11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>(Jesus said:) Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and <strong>he will<\/strong> at once put at <strong>my disposal more than twelve legions of angels<\/strong>?\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 26:53)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Son of Man (Jesus) will <strong>send out his angels<\/strong>, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 13:41)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels have their own will.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Angels are able to choose freely whether to obey God or not.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who <strong>do his bidding<\/strong>, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who <strong>do his will<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Psalm 103:20-21)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>And the angels who <strong>did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling<\/strong> &#8211; these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.\u00a0\u00a0 (Jude 1:6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are of a lower order than mankind.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Paul wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do you not know that <strong>we will judge angels<\/strong>? How much more the things of this life! (1 Corinthians 6:3)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angels are at man\u2019s service.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Angels are active in the visible world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, \u201cHe is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.\u201d \u2026 For <strong>he will command his angels<\/strong> concerning you <strong>to guard you in all your ways<\/strong>; \u2026<br \/>\n(Psalm 91:1-2,11)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Are not all angels <strong>ministering spirits<\/strong> sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?\u00a0 \u00a0(Hebrews 1:14)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you <strong>that their angels<\/strong> in heaven <strong>always see the face of my Father<\/strong> in heaven.\u00a0\u00a0 (Matthew 18:10)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>At that time <strong>Michael<\/strong>, the great prince <strong>who protects your people<\/strong>, will arise.\u00a0\u00a0 (Daniel 12:1)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cherubs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Cherubs are mentioned in 66 verses of the Bible.<br \/>\nVery many of these texts refer to the construction of the tabernacle, and, later, of the temple in Jerusalem. There were two cherubs on the atonement cover that covered the ark and cherubs were also to be worked into the multicoloured woven fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Only Ezekiel saw cherubs in a vision, as he describes in chapter 10 of his book.<br \/>\nHe had apparently seen cherubs previously, as he writes in 1:1 and 3:23, and, later, in 43:3.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Online Bijbel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/online-bijbel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OLB<\/span><\/a> translates the <strong>Hebrew for cherub (keruwb)<\/strong> as: angelic being, as guardian of Eden, as standing beside the throne of God.<br \/>\nA description of the two cherubs on the atonement cover of the ark is given with the <strong>Greek for cherub (cheroubin).<br \/>\n<\/strong>A more detailed <a title=\"Ezekiel 28:14 \u2013 A guardian cherub\" href=\"http:\/\/www.manual4life.org\/en\/ezekiel-2814-guardian-cherub\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">explanation of cherubs<\/span> <\/a>is to be found in a separate study.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Seraphs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Seraphs are only mentioned in the Old Testament.<br \/>\nThe <strong>Hebrew for seraph (saraph)<\/strong> is to be found in 7 verses of the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>The OLB translates as follows:<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Saraph<\/strong> \u2013 is derived from the verb<strong> \u2018saraph\u2019<\/strong> (translated as: (to burn (up)).<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Saraph<\/strong> is translated as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Serpent, fiery serpent \u2013 venomous snake (fiery, because of the burning sensation of the poison)<\/li>\n<li>Seraph, seraphim \u2013 majestic beings with six wings, human hands and\/or voices, who serve God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only Isaiah describes seraphs he has seen in the vision, in which he was called to be a prophet of God.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were <strong>seraphim<\/strong>, each with <strong>six wings<\/strong>: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.\u00a0 <strong>And they were calling to one another: \u201cHoly, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty<\/strong>; the whole earth is full of his glory.\u201d At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. \u201cWoe to me!\u201d I cried. \u201cI am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.\u201d Then one of the <strong>seraphim<\/strong> flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, \u201cSee, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.\u201d Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, \u201cWhom shall I send? And who will go for us?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Isaiah 6:1-8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other verses in the Bible where the Hebrew word <strong>saraph<\/strong> appears, which is also translated as seraph.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, \u201cWhy have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!\u201d Then the LORD sent <strong>venomous (seraph)<\/strong> snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died &#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 (Numbers 21:5-6)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>The LORD said to Moses, \u201cMake a <strong>snake (saraph)<\/strong> and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Numbers 21:8)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8230; then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its <strong>venomous (saraph)<\/strong> snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.\u00a0\u00a0 (Deuteronomy 8:14-15)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>Do not rejoice, all you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken; from the root of that snake will spring up a viper, its fruit will be a darting, <strong>venomous serpent (saraph).\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> (Isaiah 14:29)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>A prophecy concerning the animals of the Negev: Through a land of hardship and distress, of lions and lionesses, of adders and darting <strong>snakes (saraph),<\/strong> the envoys carry their riches on donkeys\u2019 backs, their treasures on the humps of camels, to that unprofitable nation.
